Quand j’étais petite, sept, huit ans, j’avais une pensée qui m’exaltait : mourir." Franca enfilait alors son bel habit de taffetas lilas à l’ourlet doré cousu par les blanches mains de sa mère. Elle s’allongeait sur son lit, un rosaire courant entre ses doigts, un sourire paisible aux lèvres sous un voile blanc et fermait les yeux. Las, aucun public, Franca Rame perdait son calme, puis culpabilisait, écrivait-elle dernièrement au journal "Il Fatto Quotidiano". Ce mercredi matin, elle n’a pas rouvert les yeux.
Forcément, Franca Rame est une actrice précoce, car enfant de la balle. Née en 1929 à Villastanza en Italie, à peine huit jours de vie, elle était déjà sur les planches pour jouer un nouveau-né. Ce métier, elle ne l’a pas choisi, pourtant elle l’a bel et bien embrassé, jusqu’à épouser un grand échalas d’acteur, trop timide pour la courtiser. En 1954, Franca Rame le pousse contre un mur et d’un baiser fougueux débute son aventure amoureuse, théâtrale et politique avec Dario Fo.
En 1958, le couple fonde la compagnie théâtrale "Dario Fo - Franca Rame". Le succès est au rendez-vous, au point de les voir présenter en 1962 une émission phare de la télévision, "Canzonissima". Mais le duo dérange, dénonce dans ses saynètes. Là où la censure s’annonce, ils claquent la porte et retournent sur scène où leur commedia dell’arte a des accents éminemment politiques. Communistes, un temps, ils virent plus à gauche et s’immergent dans le vent de changement de 1968. Le couple refuse alors le théâtre subventionné pour tenter l’aventure coopérative en fondant le collectif Nuova Scena, puis La Commune. Les satyres, dont "Mort accidentelle d’un anarchiste", s’enchaînent sous le regard malsain de la police et les vivats de publics bigarrés dans des usines ou écoles occupées. Ils font du bruit sur le terrain de bataille des extrêmes gauche et droite de l’Italie de plomb. Trop de bruit.
"Allez bouge, pute : tu dois me faire jouir !" Ce soir du 9 mars 1973, un fourgon ralentit près de Franca Rame. Cinq hommes l’utilisent, en font leur cendrier, y aiguisent leurs lames. Des néofascistes, envoyés en mission par des carabiniers soucieux du "péril rouge". Il n’y aura pas de justice, la prescription enterrera l’affaire 25 ans plus tard. Il y aura d’abord le silence, puis un texte, cru, "Le Viol". Cette voix des femmes n’a pas cessé de lutter, faisant des paroles des armes pour tuer cette idée de la femme objet, notamment dans "Récits de Femmes" écrit en collaboration avec son époux nobellisé en 1997.
Son engagement la porta brièvement à rentrer en politique. Elue au parlement italien en 2006, Franca Rame démissionna pourtant deux ans plus tard, incapable de supporter les compromis. Fragilisée depuis une attaque l’an passé, elle se déplaçait en chaise roulante et se lamentait de ne pas avoir de projets, sinon des funérailles : "Des femmes, plein de femmes, toutes celles que j’ai aidées, des proches, amies ou ennemies vêtues de rouge qui chantent ‘bella ciao’."
